What Is Massage Therapy?

If you’re looking for a way to correct your posture, improve your sleep and melt that tension, stress and pain away, then let’s talk about the power of massage therapy!

What is massage therapy? It’s a holistic practice involving manual manipulation of the soft tissues of the body, including muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia. It uses various techniques like stroking, kneading, pressing, stretching, compression, tapping and, sometimes, active muscle engagement to achieve various therapeutic goals.
I’m sure you can relate to the feeling of that spot in your upper back, or maybe your hip or somewhere else, that you keep stretching and leaning and breathing into, that constant ache that won’t let go? Or when you get a blissful moment to yourself looking for relaxation, only to find that it seems your whole body is holdin’ onto every little thing, let me tell you, you aren’t alone!

Massage therapy is an ideal modality for postural correction!

Now, I not just talking about some fancy spa treatment (although those can be lovely too, it’s not my specialty). Massage therapy isn’t just for “relaxation” or inducing a good nap. I’m talking about the deep-tissue work, the kneading and the soothing that gets to the very heart of your stress, tension, pain and postural dysfunction. As a seasoned massage therapist, I’ve seen it all, from athletes with knotted-up muscles to office workers hunched over computers (my favorite clients for correcting rounded shoulders!), to mamas carrying the world on their shoulders (literally, sometimes with a little one attached!). And let me tell you, each and every one of them walks out lighter, brighter, and feeling connected and grounded, like a whole new version of themselves.

But massage therapy isn’t just about physical relief. It’s about emotional release too. Ever felt like you’re holdin’ onto something deep down, something you can’t quite shake? Well, those knots and tight spots in your muscles? They can hold onto that emotional baggage too. And with a skilled therapist, those knots can be gently unraveled, releasing not just physical tension, but emotional burdens as well. It’s like a deep cleanse for your soul!

Now, I know some folks might still be stuck in the idea that massage therapy is a luxury and not a long term solution to getting to or maintaining specific goals (which can be anything from decreasing pain to helping with recovery from marathon training to building in regular still time for their mental health) But listen, I’ve studied the science and seen the proof straight from the massage table and directly from my clients’ experience. Studies show that massage therapy can reduce stress hormones, improve sleep, boost your immune system, improve range of motion, decrease pain and complement other modalities such as chiropractic work.

As a dedicated and educated therapeutic massage practitioner, I constantly strive to merge my clients goals with the physical and mental therapeutic benefits of massage therapy. So, whether you’re a weekend warrior with sore muscles, a desk jockey with a tight back and rounded shoulders, or just someone looking for self-care, I urge you to give massage therapy a try. A consistent investment in yourself, in your well-being, in your mind, body, and soul goes a long way.
